The parking attendant here was terribly rude, insensitive, inflexible, angry. This morning I was literally 7 minutes early for my reservation I made with Spothero /ParkingPanda, and the attendant coldly told me to reverse my car and wait outside (despite the danger of traffic building up on 110th). No one else was trying to enter the garage behind me, so I didn’t understand his impatient request, but I started to do what he demanded. While I was visibly nervous about backing up my car in the narrow tunnel squished between four other vehicles, the other attendant on duty told me I could just move up my car into an empty space for the time being. I did so and thanked him. Not one minute later, the first angry attendant stomped over to my car and waved his arms to open my window. He shouted, “I told you to get out! You need to wait outside!” I let him know his coworker kindly told me to pull in because it was too hard for me to reverse back out into traffic when in such a crowded, narrow tunnel filled with cars.

Parking in New York

New York is one of the busiest and most densely populated cities in the US. Parking rates in NYC are one of the highest in the country. Here are some ideas on how to survive when looking for a place to park in New York.

Commercial garages in Manhattan charge $12-$18 per hour and can go up as high as $55 per 24 hours (SUVs and oversized vehicles are charged additional fees). It’s a good idea to look for early bird and overnight specials or coupons for discounted parking!

A good alternative is to park in the suburbs and then take public transport to downtown:

On-street parking

On-street parking in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island is $1 per hour, while on-street meters in Manhattan charge from $1.50 to $6 per hour, depending on the area. Meters take quarters and credit cards.

On-street rates in PARK-Smart areas will vary depending on the time of day and demand.

On-street signage can be confusing. Check the NYC parking regulations, so that you don’t get a pricey ticket.
